Name: Thupten Jampa
Personal Background: I was born in 1975 at Kitpi Village in Arunachal Pradesh. I studied at Tawang Monastery in 1981 when I was mere child of 6 years old. I studied Buddhist Scriptures there for three years. Later I moved t South India in the year 1984 and studied Buddhist Philosophy and Tantric at Gyudmed Tantric University. In the year 1999, I was awarded the degree of Geshe Ngarampa.
A brief introduction of Gyudmed Tantric Monastic University:
In 1433, Jetsun Sherap Sengge, a direct disciple of Lama Tsongkhapa, founder of the Gyudmed Tantric Monastery University. This Tantric Monastery is one of the most important within the Gelugpa sect.
In 1959, 150 monks from Gyudmed Monastery fled from the Chinese occupation of the Tibet to seek refuge in India. For 12 years they lived in temporary accommodation in Dhalhousie (Northern India). During that time that the monks wove carpets and painted religious panels in order to raise money to support their education in Tantric rituals, traditional secret and arts and philosophy. It was this prioritizing of education that has meant that the traditional secret arts and religious practices still survives within the exile community today.
1972 the Indian Government provided land for a Tibetan Refugee Settlement near Mysore, south India. Each person as allocated an acre of farming land and each family a house. At that time there were only 150 monks in Gyudmed Monastery and so the monastery was allocated 150 acres of land. On this land the new monastery was built and a farming project set up. The settlement, which is now home to 5,000 Tibetan refugees and 1,000 monks, is in a very remote area, which is perfect for monastic practice.
Career background: I studied computers and spoken English in New Delhi. Now I am working as a Secretary at Manjushree Vidyapith, Orphanage in Tawang, INDIA.
